Football governing body UEFA has begun disciplinary proceedings against Bayern Munich after the team’s fans displayed a homophobic banner at a match.

The German fans held up a banner at Tuesday’s (March 11) Arsenal fixture, which featured the words ‘Gay Gunners’.

The banner also featured a drawing of a footballer bending over in front of Arsenal’s signature cannon.

The Telegraph reports that Bayern Munich could be fined £50,000 because of their fans behaviour.

UEFA have now released a statement, saying: “Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against FC Bayern München for discriminatory behaviour of their supporters, display of an illicit banner and late kick-off at their Uefa Champions League round-of-16 match against Arsenal FC, the 1-1 draw in Germany on Tuesday.

“The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on March 20,” they added.
