Transgender men and women reveal their biggest insecurities

By Ben Kelly

A new motivational video shows prominent members of the transgender community discussing their biggest fears and insecurities openly.

The clip, which marks a Trans Day of Visibility on March 31, includes London nightlife personality Munroe Bergdorf, and US fitness model Laith Ashley. Through candid chats to the camera, they discuss their transitions, and the difficulties they still encounter on a daily basis.

“My biggest worry was that I had no idea what I was doing,” says Bergdorf, who recently starred in a new Uniqlo campaign. “One person’s transition is not the same as anybody else’s.”

Laith Ashley, who took to the runway at New York Fashion Week in February, says, “I didn’t know how to tell my family, because religion played such a big part in my family’s lives.”

The men and women also discuss insecurities such as the pitch of their voice, and features like their noses, which can sometimes ‘out’ them as transgender.

“My biggest fear was that if I transitioned, no one was ever going to want to date me again”, Graf says. “If I could have transitioned ten years earlier, then I would have loved to do that. there was so much time in my life waiting to be happy.”

Jake, who also made the film, told Attitude he hopes it will help others who are struggling with their identities. “I think it’s important to show that we all have our own insecurities, fears and concerns, and that we all occasionally have to work to stay positive. Just be yourself, there is light at the end of the tunnel!”
