Stonewall has received Heritage Lottery Fund support for a new legacy project.

They have received £68,800 in lottery funding for a new project looking back at the campaign for equality for lesbian, gay and bisexual people over the last 25 years.

The project will follow the gay rights movement from 1989, focusing on the accomplishments of individuals, historic events and landmark changes to legislation.

For the next two years, a variety of activities will take place around the country, as well as an oral history project to celebrate the older LGB community.

James Taylor, Stonewall’s Head of Policy, said of the funding: “We are thrilled to have the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund to ensure the voices and contributions of all those involved in the gay equality movement since 1989 are not lost or forgotten.”

Earlier this month, Independence Day director Roland Emmerich announced that he is making a film based on the Stonewall riots. War Horse star Jeremy Irvine will play the lead role in Stonewall.
