Sam Smith has offered some advice to people who are struggling to get to grips with being gay.

The singer, who recently revealed that his debut album is inspired by his feelings of unrequited love for a man, is currently touring radio stations across the US in support of the album, In the Lonely Hour.

During an interview earlier this week, the 22-year-old from Cambridgeshire was asked what advice he would give to people finding it difficult to come out to their friends and family.

“I would say just be yourself. Don’t make it an issue. Let’s make it a normality,” he told the Jim & Kim radio show. “To make it equal, we need to act equal. Everyone just needs to focus on themselves as individuals and do what makes them happy, and be brave.”

“Listen to my record, it might help you,” he added.

Last week, Smith’s album In The Lonely Hour debuted at number two in the US – with the highest first week sales for a debut album by a UK male artist ever – click here to read the full story. In the Lonely Hour had previously debuted at Number One on the UK’s Official Albums Chart.
