A pro-LGBT priest has said the Catholic Church makes the LGBT community feel like “lepers”.

Father James Martin urged Catholics to reconsider their attitudes towards the LGBT Catholics and called for them to be welcomed into their parish.

While speaking at the World Meeting of Families in Dublin, he said: “Over the last few years, I have heard really sad stories from LGBT Catholics who have been made to feel unwelcome in their parties.

“They’ve have often been treated like lepers in our Church. Never underestimate the pain that LGBT people have experience not only at the hands of our church, but from society at large.

“Parishes need to be aware of the consequences of stigmatising LGBT people.”

Despite huge demand for him to be removed from the list of speakers, Fr Martin received a standing ovation from the crowd.
