Northern Irish politician responds to Ellen Page criticism

By Josh Haggis

A right wing politician has responded to comments made by actress Ellen Page, who criticised the decision to award him with an MBE.

Northern Irish politician Maurice Mills was honoured with the award last week, despite blaming Hurricane Katrina on Louisiana’s support of LGBT rights in 2005.

After hearing about the award, Page tweeted: “The Queen honored a politician who blamed Hurricane Katrina & AIDS on LGBT people. Fuck that.” Find out more here.

Now, Mills has responded to Page’s criticism, arguing that his viewpoints are taken “directly from the word of God”.

“I welcome the scrutiny of anybody. These people are making judgment on a person when they haven’t a clue about his background or what the position is,” he told News Letter.  “I’m not getting into a mix about that. My position is taken from the word of God and I’ll obviously not be moving from that, it’s as simple as that.”

Going on to discuss his original controversial comments, he added: “I said this could be a warning, just as God has done countless times through the ages.”
