Gay son comes out to father in emotional Taiwanese McDonald’s ad

A new McDonald’s commercial airing in Taiwan shows the touching moment a son comes out to his father.

Over a ‘McCafe’, the son writes ‘I like boys’ on the side of his paper cup, and turns it towards his father, who initially reacts badly, thumping his fist and walking off.

He then returns, gathers himself, and takes the boy’s cup and adds to it, so it reads ‘I accept that you like boys’ and turns it back towards him.

The pair exchange smiles before the tagline “Let there be more warmth in conversations” appears on screen.

The heartwarming ad premiered on March 4 and has already been viewed over a million times on YouTube – and while it’s received mostly positive comments from viewers, its message of tolerance has already sparked criticism from some of Taiwan’s regligious community, Shanghaiist reports.

Chang Shou-yi, secretary general of the Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of Family, has even urged parents and consumers to boycott McDonald’s.

“Now, even if you want to just take a leak at a McDonald’s bathroom, you can’t help but feel polluted,” he was quoted as saying.

In an official statement, Chang wrote that the Alliance “does not approve of the ideological stand behind the advertisement” and accused McDonald’s of “openly promoting gay issues.”

“Because McDonald’s is frequented by many children, it is especially important to oppose the promotion of same-sex behavior,” the statement added. As such, the Alliance “opposes all advertising that miseducate children on sexual behavior,” and “rebukes and boycotts all enterprises that are polluting the next generation.”

Meanwhile Taiwan recently elected its first female president, who also supports the introduction of same-sex marriage in the country, which is regarded as one of the most progressive in Asia one the issue of LGBT rights.
