David Cameron says gay marriage was a ‘great step’ in his legacy during his resignation speech
The results of the EU referendum are in and the UK has voted to leave the European Union.
The BBC reports that David Cameron has resigned this morning shortly after the results of the referendum were released. He states however that he will remain in place until October when a new Prime Minister comes in.
During his resignation speech in London, Cameron stated that he was “very proud and very honoured” to have been the Prime Minister for six years and says that gay marriage was one of the “big steps” he made as Prime Minister.
He said, “I believe we’ve made great steps with more people in work than ever before in our history, with reforms to welfare and education, increasing people’s life chances and building a bigger and stronger society.”
He adds, “Keeping our promises to the poorest people in the world and enabling those who love each together to get married, whatever their sexuality.”
“The British people have voted to leave the European Union and their will must be respected.”
While Cameron worked in the campaign to remain, he thanks those who worked for the other side of the argument.
“I want to thank everyone who took part in the campaign on my side of the argument including all those who put aside differences to speak in what they believed was the national interest.”
“And let me congratulate all of those who took part in the Leave campaign for the spirited and passionate case that they made.”
He says the referendum was “not a decision that was taken lightly” but wants to reassure EU citizens living here and Brits living in the EU that there will be no “immediate change”.
“I would also reassure Brits living in European countries and European citizens living here that there will be no immediate changes in your circumstances, there will be no initial change in the way our people can travel, in the way our goods can move or the way our services can be sold.”
He added that “We must now prepare for a negotiation with the European Union.”
“This will need to involve the full engagement of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland governments to ensure that the interests of all parts of our United Kingdom are protected and advanced.”
The UK voted to leave the European Union by 52% to 48%.
