Cyprus’ first same-sex wedding

By Fabio Crispim

Following the new civil unions law in Cyprus, a same-sex couple have become the first to marry openly.

The civil unions bill passed in November last year and the couple have bravely tied the knot earlier this week.

Keeping with tradition, Frixou’s mother greeted the couple by handing them both a gold coin, old family heirlooms which they hung around their necks. The couple then danced to a violin rendition of the traditional wedding song.

Marios Frixou and Fanos Fletheriades have said they want to put their heads above the parapets rather than hide who they are, hoping the message spreads to others.

While the civil unions bill took effect last year in Cyprus there is still no recognition of trans rights, gay people can remain banned from the military and same-sex adoption still isn’t legal.

All the same, we wish a congratulations to Marious and Fanos.
