Catholic Church in Scotland promises to tackle classroom homophobia

By Will Stroude

Catholic Church in Scotland has promised to tackle classroom homophobia.

A spokesperson for the Church spoke of their commitment to improving LGBT students’ experiences to Scottish paper The Herald, saying: “The Church is working with the Catholic Head Teacher association to ensure that all teachers have adequate knowledge, understanding and training and feel confident in addressing all aspects of relationships education, including LGBTI matters, in an appropriate and sensitive way.”

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also reaffirmed her commitment to the campaign, which is headed up by “Time for Inclusive Education” (TIE), saying:

“I don’t want to live in a country, yet alone be First Minister of a country, where any young person has to feel that, somehow, because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, they are subject to judgement or made to feel in any way less than any other individual in our society”.

Earlier this year the Pope instructed Catholics globally to treat lesbians and gays with “greater understanding”, but stopped short of asking the followers to treat trans people with the same respect.
