Caitlyn Jenner talks equal marriage opposition with Ellen

By Shaun Kitchener

Caitlyn Jenner sat down with Ellen DeGeneres this week for her first ever talk-show appearance; discussing her conservative political views and her reluctant acceptance of equal marriage.

In a conversation that prompted the host to tell Jenner “you’re kind of a little not on board with it”, the reality star insisted “I don’t want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.”

At one point putting the word “marriage” in air-quotes and referring to the whole movement as “gay marriage” while Ellen sticks to “equal” or “same-sex marriage”, she explained: “I have to admit that I remember 15 years ago, 20 years ago whenever it was the whole gay marriage issue came up at first, I was not for it.

“I mean I thought, ‘I’m a traditionalist,’ I mean I’m older than most people in the audience. I mean I like tradition and it’s always been between a man and a woman and I’m thinking ‘I don’t quite get it’.”

She later added: “Okay, if that word marriage is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.” Ellen patiently explained why the word matters, and Caitlyn conceded: “It’s going to be pretty much the law of the land.”

And on her Republican allegiances, Ellen insisted she didn’t want to generalise but pointed out: “A lot of Republicans would vote against all the issues that you as a woman and you as a trans person would want someone to support.”

“I agree with that in some cases,” Caitlyn admitted.
