Billy Crystal: ‘I hope TV doesn’t shove gay sex scenes in our face’

Billy Crystal has admitted that he hopes TV show’s stop “shoving” gay sex scenes in viewer’s faces.
Crystal, who played one of US TV’s first ever gay characters on 1970’s sitcom Soap, has argued that the media’s portrayal of gay sex scenes is becoming ” a little too much” for him.
“Sometimes I think, ‘Ah that’s too much for me,” Crystal said during a panel interview at the Television Critics Association this week.
“Sometimes, it’s just pushing it a little too far for my taste and I’m not going to reveal to you which ones they are,” said Crystal. “I hope people don’t abuse it and shove it in our face to the point where it feels like an every day kind of thing.”
The comedian went on to talk about his experience filming a gay scene for Soap, revealing that the studio audience were far less accepting than they are today.
“I did it in front of a live audience and there were times when I would say to Bob [Seagren], ‘I love you,’ and the audience would laugh nervously. I wanted to stop the taping and go, ‘What is your problem?’”
