organisers have revealed that the poster banned from the London Underground for containing male nudity was not the ‘full bum’ version that was first reported.

The production’s new poster was unveiled this week, featuring actor Lewis Reeves in the nude. The image passed Advertising Standards Authority restrictions but Transport for London (TfL) said it would not be displayed on the Underground – read more here.

Organisers tweeted last night (January 20) that they had just discovered the actual image banned was a less explicit, edited version however.

Kevin Elyot’s seminal 1994 play about a group of gay friends dealing with the HIV/AIDS crisis was revived by the Donmar Warehouse last year and transfers to the Apollo Theatre this Saturday (January 17).

A TfL press officer orginally said that while they hadn’t seen the image personally, “if it has been rejected it means that it doesn’t meet the guidance that we have set.”

Last October, posters for Shakespeare’s Globe’s ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore featuring a couple embracing were also banned after TfL ruled that it it broke rules prohibiting “nude or semi-nude figures in an overtly sexual context”.

My Night with Reg will run at London’s Apollo Theatre for 11 weeks starting this Saturday.
