Average Brit knows more gays than lesbians, says survey
By Josh Haggis

The average British person knows significantly more gay men than lesbians, according to a new survey.
The survey, carried out by YouGov, found that a British person knows an average of 5.5 gay men but just 3.1 lesbians.
Women are more likely than men to know lesbians, but women are still more likely to know gay men than lesbians.
Those living in London were found to know more gay men – with the average increasing to 8.5, though the number of lesbians they know remained the same.
Within the LGB community, the figures were obviously much higher – with the average LGB person knowing 21.6 gay men and 10.3 lesbians.
The number of gay people people living in the UK is unknown, but LGB charity Stonewall places the figure at approximately six percent of the population, saying: “Historically people have got bogged down in endless rows about this – with some of the more colourful gay activists insisting as many as 20 per cent of the population was gay, while people who were opposed to gay equality, such as Norman Tebbit, claimed it was one in 100. Six percent feels like a sensible estimate.”
Meanwhile, a recent study in Australia has found that children raised by gay couples are “healthier” than those brought up by heterosexual couples – click here to find out more.
