Anti-gay marriage clerk Kim Davis booted from office after losing re-election race

Kim Davis, the Kansas country clerk who was jailed for five days in 2015 after refusing to issue gay couples with marriage licences, has been defeated in her race for re-election.
Davis, 53, lost to Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr. in the Rowan County Clerk election race on Tuesday (6 November), as Americans took to the polls for the US midterm elections.
At final count, the Republican candiate, who was elected in 2014 as on a Democratic ticket, lost by 3566 votes (46%) to 4210 (54%) – a difference of 644 votes.
Davis’s booting from public office come more than three years after she rose to international prominence after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples following the Supreme Court’s June 2015 ruling legalising marriage equality across the nation.
Davis, who has been married four times to three different men, became a pin-up girl for the conservative Christian right, even meeting with Pope Francis in the weeks following her release from jail.
Her replacement as clerk, Elwood Caudill, had previously defeated a gay man who was denied a marriage license by Kim Davis in 2015 in the Democratic primary.
That man, David Ermol, later refused to throw his support behind Caudill, accusing him of also being a bigot – a claim Caudill has denied.
