A new Kansas Bill aims to fine trans people for using the ‘wrong’ bathroom
There have been two bills introduced in the Kansas House and Senate which aim to restrict which bathrooms transgender people can use. The passing of the bills would mean trans people could be sued for using the bathroom that doesn’t correspond to their chromosomes.
The bills claim to ‘protect the dignity, health and welfare’ of students in public schools. However, the bill has been criticized as being nonsensical, according to Pink News, and the idea that non-transgender students need protecting from their trans classmates is being called transphobic.
The Senator, who introduced bill 513, told KCTV5: “Parents have reached out in fear of their children’s safety. They do not want attention for fear of being called a bigot or their children being ostracised.”
However mother of a trans college student and social worker, Lyn Barnett, said the bills would ‘legislate hate and bigotry’.
