40 people injured after terrifying floor collapse at Tenerife gay club

Forty people have been injured after part of the floor collapsed at a packed gay nightclub in Tenerife.
The incident occurred at the Butterfly Disco Club in Adeje, at around 2.30am on Sunday morning (November 26) while a drag performance was underway.
Around 21 people were taken to a local hospital via emergency services while another 18 travelled by their own means for treatment.
Two people are believed to be in serious condition at hospital. Other injuries include broken legs, sprained ankles and bruises.
Firefighters soon arrived on the scene and picked through the rubble with their hands in the basement to find anyone trapped. They remained there until 6 am and rescued “several people”.
The regional government confirmed in a statement: “After the floor collapsed, the people who were inside fell to the basement from the height of approximately one floor.”
Speaking to the Bolorino website, one witness said: “I was at the club called Papagaio which is next door to a gay club called Butterfly, and suddenly a friend of mine comes screaming: ‘Please help me, please help me’ and it turns out the club floor had collapsed, broken in half, and people fell with it.”
“We saw a whole bunch of people hurt and police everywhere and they closed the main street. It was a big disaster, there really were a lot of people hurt and there is no explanation as to why it happened.”
Police are currently investigating the incident.
