Argentinian footballer Nacho Lago, striker for Club Atlético Colón, has sparked praise after his boyfriend left a heartwarming message for him live on air.

Lago appeared on the weekly football show Sangre y Luto in 2025, which resurfaced after reports indicated a contract extension keeping him at Colón through December 2027.

The episode included surprise messages from his grandparents, followed by one from his boyfriend, Gonzalo, who had organised the surprise.

In the video, Lago’s boyfriend said: “All I can do is congratulate you and thank you for being such an excellent person and such an outstanding professional. I know all the grit you put into this… Thank you for defending the colours of my city.”

The moment marked one of the first times the 23-year-old had publicly addressed his boyfriend in an interview, calling their relationship “an irrational love” and comparing it to his passion for football.

The resurfaced video has been widely praised by fans and athletes alike, including on Colón’s fan social media pages. A club news page sent their support via a message on X.

“The guy has more balls than anyone” – a Colón’s fan social media page supporting Lago’s visibility

“Anyone who messes with Nachito Lago is messing with me. Homophobic sons of bitches. The guy has more balls than anyone and on top of that he’s a crack on the court. Keep talking, that’s all,” they said.

Luciana Trinchieri, the journalist who interviewed Lago about his relationship on the sports programme, has also spoken out after the video went viral.

Translated, she told local radio show Un mañanero: “He doesn’t present it, he doesn’t make it official, because in reality we gave the surprise in complicity with his partner.”

“There was no intention to expose this; everything happened naturally. In fact, they were sharing things on social media,” Trinchieri said.

In global men’s football, very few active male players have publicly come out during their careers, and South American athletes are no exception.

Lago’s public display of affection for his partner represents a monumental turning point in professional football worldwide.

Colón are due to play next in the Argentina Primera Nacional on 26 April 2026, against Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba, following their match against Deportivo Morón on 18 April.
