As the age-old ‘North of the River vs. South of the River’ debate shows no signs of disappearing, buyers looking to put down roots South of the River are dropping a pin in the map in Deptford, a popular neighbourhood in South East London’s Borough of Culture 2022. “Winning ‘Best Family Home’ at this year’s Evening Standard New Homes Awards, it is easy to see why The Scene is proving so popular!

With Deptford High Street holding its own at #17 of The 33 Coolest Streets in the World*, enviably located between New Cross and Deptford stations, Peabody’s The Scene offers buyers a slice of the action with a luxurious range of two and three-bedroom duplexes and three-bedroom townhouses, some available via the Help to Buy scheme.

Already enjoying The Scene to its full advantage are Will and Chris, who moved from a tiny one-bedroom flat with no outside space in London Bridge to a spacious two-bedroom apartment with a balcony, so their cats could have more room to explore.

Will comments: “I had always wanted an apartment with a balcony, so we knew this would be perfect for us. Not only does it mean that our cats have more space to roam, but we have an amazing view too – we can see the whole city which is incredible, we can even see The Shard, where we used to live!”

He continues: “Our balcony has even helped us make friends with the neighbours! We decorated it like a garden, with a table and chairs, and an outdoor rug which we like to fill with cushions and chill out on a sunny day. We’ve got herbs, lots of flowers and around 20 tomato plants growing, which I’ve promised that I will give to some our neighbours.

“It’s such a nice community here; we have a WhatsApp group so that we can all get to know each other, and some of them have already been round here for dinner!

“Chris is a great baker and recently got a long way through the selection process for The Great British Bake Off, so has been making full use of the beautiful kitchen in our new home to practise. His cinnamon carrot cake buns are a definite favourite!”

With the buzz of Goldsmiths University, a lively arts scene, and a strong sense of identity, it comes as no surprise that Deptford was recently named as a potential new Hackney.**

Alive with possibilities and an independent spirit, the area oozes creativity. Those looking to dine out in Deptford will not be disappointed. Specialising in simple, but delicious dishes, Marcella serves Italian cuisine made with the freshest produce.

Alternatively, Jamaican delicacies are plentiful at Buster Mantis. Named after the first prime minister of Jamaica, this trendy eatery is located within two railway arches beneath Deptford station.

For those keen on a characterful Victorian pub, The Brookmill serves British pub classics alongside locally brewed beers, while the Winemakers Club is the place to go for those hoping to sip on samples from small, diverse wine merchants.

A short walk away is the bustling Deptford Market Yard, home to an eclectic mix of boutiques, eateries, cafés, and bars.

Will reflects: “We’ve lived in both Elephant and Castle and London Bridge, and Deptford is the perfect mixture of the two. We’ve still got a lot to explore!”

Proximity to transport links and green spaces makes this a fantastic base for working and enjoying the diversity of London living. For those looking to give their legs a proper stretch, the nearby Greenwich Park offers stunning panoramic views of the Thames and Canary Wharf.

Will explains: “The green feel to this development is a breath of fresh air. We love walking along the river to Greenwich, which takes about 15 minutes and is beautiful, especially on sunny evenings. It’s so easy to get into the City – New Cross Station is a two-minute walk from our home, and London Bridge is one five-minute stop away!”

At the top of the checklist for fellow The Scene residents, Ivan & Mikolaj, was finding somewhere they would be able to enjoy life with their new puppy Griffin.

Ivan comments: “We had always planned to get a puppy, so we knew that our new home would have to be big enough to accommodate this, and have plenty of local places to take him for walks. Luckily, Deptford has so many lovely places for walking.

“Our favourite place to go is Deptford Park which is a huge space where Griffin can run around, just a 15-minute walk away, and there’s also a small doggy park locally which is ideal for puppies.

“If we want to take him on a shorter walk in the evenings, we either walk him around the development which has its own green space, or there’s a number of smaller open spaces within a short distance from our home.”

The Scene is located on the border of Deptford and New Cross, just a short walk from Greenwich.

Speaking of the fantastic location, Mikolaj explains: “We have completely fallen in love with our new neighbourhood. As well as the numerous parks surrounding the development, we have some really lovely pubs and restaurants close by too.

“The transport links are incredible – I can get to my office on Blackfriars Road in 15 minutes from Deptford Station, and from New Cross station we can get to London Bridge in under five minutes!”

Peabody is offering up to £22,250 towards Stamp Duty on selected 3-bedroom homes when you reserve before the end of October 2022. T&Cs apply, please speak to our staff for details.
