Icelandic water company puts a gay spin on classic Diet Coke commercial

By Troy Nankervis

A new online commercial recreates the infamous Diet Coke Super Bowl commercial that first premiered back over 20 years ago, while adding an expected gay twist.

Keeping the pace, formula and even some of the editing choices from the original commercial, the update sees a pair of female office employees fawning over a sexy male surfer as he peels off his wetsuit and downs a refreshing and rejuvenating bottle of Icelandic Glacial water.

In a delightful addition, a gay male office worker joins his colleagues to marvel in the sight of the surfer.

Icelandic Water Holdings chairman Jón Ólafsson told Gay Iceland the company did not “discriminate between people based on their sexuality”, gender, race or faith.

“In my mind people are people; either they’re good human beings, beautiful on the inside, or they’re not,” he said.

“Simple as that. And I believe people have the right to be who they are, that’s just basic human rights.”

Viewed almost 54,000 times on YouTube, Olafsson adds the “response has only been positive”. “We’re very glad about that. The attention is just great.”

Sold in 20 countries, Icelandic Glacial water joins a growing number of global brands including Tylenol, IKEA and the Campbell Soup Company who have featured LGBT characters and story arcs in their advertising.
