Pose star Indya Moore has criticised their former boss Ryan Murphy for remaining “silent” on transphobic attacks in the US and around the world.
In a heartfelt Instagram video, Moore addressed the growing hostility towards trans people and called out Murphy, the creator of the FX show in which they starred between 2018 and 2021.
The actor, with tears in their eyes, thanked those who have supported the trans community while warning that trans people are increasingly being framed as “terrorists” and a “threat”, even as their rights are being stripped away.
“The fact that Ryan Murphy has been so silent? Like, we really pissed you off that much, Ryan?” – Indya Moore criticising the writer and director
“I have never thought that our belief that people should be free, or that we should be free from harm or violence, could ever be conceptualised as ‘threatening,'” they said. “I really, genuinely never knew.
“Y’all can’t make up your mind about how you want to view us. As weak and as a target to bully, or as a strong, bold threat. Ya’ll don’t know what to do.”
After praising those who have “given us jobs” and elevated trans voices, Moore directly challenged Murphy. “We really, really need y’all. Like, the fact that Ryan Murphy has been so silent? Like, we really pissed you off that much, Ryan? Like, Ryan Murphy, who upset you that much? Janet pissed you off that much?”
The comments follow Pose writer and producer Janet Mock’s 15-minute speech at the show’s final season premiere, where she spoke on unfair pay, better treatment for trans people, and broader industry issues – including on Murphy’s productions.
“You do need to address the racism, the violence, and the targeting of people on your productions” – Moore calling for Murphy to make a stand
“And I’m just like, I’m trying to understand: How is it that you can do something like Pose during the Donald Trump administration, then it’s like… Poof… It’s gone,” Moore added. “It’s like garbage. It’s like an embarrassment. Like, that’s how it feels.”
“Ryan Murphy, we need you to do more,” they stated. “You do need to address the racism, the violence, and the targeting of people on your productions, Ryan Murphy. Yes, you do. You do need to make sure trans people are paid equally. Yes, Janet did the right thing.”
Moore also expressed frustration at how quickly the industry “forgot about Janet Mock”, who stepped back from public life and the industry in 2021 after working as a writer and executive producer on Murphy’s shows, including Pose, Hollywood, and Monster.
“We need help. Trans people need help” – Moore opening up to fans
“Y’all failed her. You failed her,” Moore said. “Too many of the girls are out here waiting for the other girl to move over so she can have her spotlight. That is what happens to marginalized people. We are competing with each other too much.”
“And let me tell you something: Trans people, we’re not loving each other the way that we should,” they added. “We’re catty, we’re jealous, we compare ourselves to the next woman, scanning to see what surgeries she got.”
Moore warned that trans people are too often judging one another rather than supporting each other — and revealed they are exploring countries that might accept them as an asylum seeker.
“We need help. Trans people need help. We need places we can go for asylum,” Moore said.
