Pop newcomer MEEK has dropped her debut single ‘Fabulous’, marking her first official release since signing to BMG.
The single arrives as part of a three-track EP, also released today (30 January), which includes ‘Brixton’ and ‘I Want Love, But Not That Much’.
‘Fabulous’ references themes of heartbreak, self-presentation and recovery, drawing on British humour and queer nightlife.
“It was the funniest thing ever. I jumped up on the bar and started lip-syncing along” – MEEK on previewing ‘Fabulous’ at Soho’s Ku Bar
The accompanying video for ‘Fabulous’ was filmed in Blackpool and directed by Sophie Muller, whose credits include work with Sade, Annie Lennox, Gwen Stefani, Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Blur and Maroon 5. It follows MEEK through the seaside town, moving between performance and street-level scenes.
Ahead of its release, ‘Fabulous’ was previewed publicly at Ku Bar in Soho, one of London’s long-running LGBTQ+ venues. MEEK described the response during the playback, saying: “It was the funniest thing ever. I jumped up on the bar and started lip-syncing along… I did half of the first intro and then everyone – literally everyone in the bar – was screaming, ‘I’m so fucking fabulous.’”
‘Brixton’, meanwhile, references life in South London and adopts a more stripped-back approach, while ‘I Want Love, But Not That Much’ addresses the end of a relationship.
MEEK says her music is intended to resonate with LGBTQ+ listeners
MEEK is described as a self-made artist whose work is informed by working-class experience and personal trauma. She says her music is intended to resonate with outsiders and marginalised audiences, including LGBTQ+ listeners.
The EP release is supported by a live appearance scheduled for 4.45pm tomorrow (31 January), with MEEK set to perform alongside DJ AG outside The O2 Arena.
