Will Young praises ‘brilliant’ Olly Alexander: ‘Pop’s changed so much’

2015 has officially been the year of Olly Alexander’s ascension, and it seems that even fellow popstars aren’t immune to the Years & Years frontman’s charms.
Will Young is the latest star to heap praise on the 25-year-old and his band, saying his “brilliant” talents and openness about his sexuality are a “perfect statement of where pop’s at at the moment”.
Speaking to DigitalSpy, the former Pop Idol winner – who recently stripped off for a paint-splattered comeback performance at London’s G-A-Y – discussed how pop music had changed since his noughties heyday.
“I don’t think talent shows are a massive part of [it]. They play their part but I think that pop music is in a really good place,” Young said.
“Years & Years are a brilliant example. Brilliant actor, brilliant singer, brilliant songwriter, openly gay, brilliant electro-melancholic music. That is a perfect statement of where pop’s at at the moment.
“Who would’ve thought that a band like that would’ve been operating in the way that they are?”
The Jealousy singer continued: “Pop’s changed so much. As a gay artist it’s like who cares? It has changed a lot and I think music’s in a really good place at the moment. I feel like bands are probably going to come back again. It always happens like that. I think by the end of next year we’ll start getting a few more bands [and] probably in a couple years time there’ll be a massive English band again.”
