Will Young has suggested that TV talent contests aren’t as exciting as they once were.

Young, 35, won the first series of X Factor predecessor Pop Idol back in 2001 and has gone on to enjoy a successful pop career spanning over a decade.

“Everything evolves. Pop Idol looks like Eurovision from the 1970s now, but I f**king loved it,” he told our friends at Digital Spy.

“People know the possibilities [now]. I didn’t know the possibilities, so it genuinely was really exciting. It’s always different when there’s a knowingness to it. It is what it is.”

The Leave Right Now singer – who guest-edited an issue of Attitude in November 2009 – went on to discuss his upcoming sixth studio album, which he hopes to release in 2015, saying:

“I’m [making music] that is more exciting than ever,” he revealed. “I think if I was just doing the same thing, I would be bored. It would feel like a long trudge if you were like, ‘Oh God, here we go again’, but it actually just gets better and better. It’s flown by.”

Last year, Young became the new patron of LGBT mental health charity PACE – click here to find out more.
