HBO has released a teaser trailer for The Normal Heart.

The drama – starring Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer – takes place in New York City in the early 1980s at the onset of the HIV-AIDS epidemic.

It was announced last month (February) that the film – which is adapted from Larry Kramer’s 1985 play of the same name – will debut in the US on May 25.

Ruffalo plays Ned Weeks, who witnesses the spread of the disease that has begun to claim the lives of many in the gay community, and sets out to discover the truth.

Julia Roberts, Taylor Kitsch, Joe Mantello, Jim Parsons and Looking‘s Jonathan Groff also star in the HBO film.

Glee and American Horror Story‘s Ryan Murphy directed The Normal Heart from a script written by Kramer.
