Simon Cowell has responded to the recent claim made in court that he is gay, insisting this is a “false suggestion” and that the very idea of questioning someone’s sexuality is now “antiquated” in 2014.

Jurors at the high-profile drug trial of former X Factor judge Tulisa Constostavlos were shown a tape last week in which her PA, Gareth Varey, is seen saying that Cowell is gay.

In the tape, when asked how he knows Cowell is gay, Varey responds by saying that though he himself has not slept with the pop mogul, “I know people who have”. Click here for full details of what Varey says in the tape.

Following the collapse of Constostavlos’s drug trial earlier today (July 21), Cowell’s legal representatives have released a statement to the Press Association in response to what was heard in court and subsequently reported in the media. It reads:

“Simon was referred to during the trial without forewarning, resulting in widespread media coverage of untrue claims regarding his private life.

In 2014 the question of whether someone is or is not gay is antiquated. (As it happens he isn’t, though if he were, he would simply have said so).

“However, the issue was the false suggestion made by Mr Varey that Simon – who is renowned for his honesty and candidness – had thus not been truthful in the public arena and this is what we have been obliged to clarify.”

Cowell will be seen on screen again next month (August) when The X Factor returns to ITV. Check out the first picture of the show’s new judging panel featuring Cheryl Cole, Mel B, Louis Walsh and Cowell here.
