Sam Smith opens up about his broken heart
Whether it’s the red carpet, an awards ceremony or a stadium concert tour, Sam Smith is accustomed to hordes of screaming fans calling out for his love and affection.
But one thing the 23-year-old singer is still working on is the more difficult task of learning the language of love.
Speaking to People on the red carpet just before the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, Smith was asked whether he had any regrets around the end of his short-lived relationship with Jonathan Zeizel last year.
Yet what the ‘Lay Me Down’ singer unexpectedly revealed was a strong pang of sadness and guilt around the relationship ending, with Smith blaming himself for how things ended in the way they did.
“It was my fault,” he said.
“I fell in love with him. I shouldn’t have done that.”
As their burgeoning romance was just beginning to blossom, Smith had shared some images with Zeizel to social media 12 months ago, which included the pair together on a park bench, and holidaying in Australia on a yacht.
At the time, Daily Mail reported Smith had also said the romance was “was very early days.”
“I’m talking very, very, very early days. But he’s really sweet,” he said.
“But people need to realise I’m never going to be happy. The reason I do what I do is because I’m an artist who is always going to be blue about something.”
While it may be been a little bit of too much, too soon with Zeizel, it does look like things are looking up for Smith. He collected a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture, alongside Jimmy Napes, for ‘Writing’s On the Wall’, the theme song to Spectre.
And when prompted again about his now-fading love affair with Zeizel, Smith said that things were not so dire anymore.
“We’re still friends,” he added. “It’s all good.”
