Sam Smith: ‘I’m surprised how far the world has come’
By Josh Haggis
Sam Smith has revealed that he was “surprised” the reception he received for coming out as gay was so positive.
After revealing earlier this year that his debut album In the Lonely Hour was written about his unrequited love for another man, the 22-year-old soul singer has explained in a new interview that the reaction he received shows “how far the world has come” with its attitude towards the LGBT community.
“Past gay artists, things have happened to them that haven’t been great,” Smith told The Telegraph. “All I can say is I’m so unbelievably surprised and happy at how far the world has come, because there have been no issues.”
Smith went on to add that he’s no longer in a hurry to find a partner because his fans have “filled the hole” for him: “Obviously I want to fall in love and stuff, but I don’t yearn for it every day like I used to. It sounds so cheesy but my fans have completely filled that hole.”
The Money on My Mind singer spoke last month (October) about how much he’s looking forward getting married and having children. Find out more here.
Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that Smith is set to record a cover version of Whitney Houston’s It’s Not Right but It’s Okay – get all the details here.
