Reese Witherspoon set to star in Legally Blonde 3

Elle Woods is making a comeback.

It’s time to start limbering up for another bend and snap, because Elle Woods could soon be back in our lives in Legally Blonde 3.

According to Variety, Reese Witherspoon is in talks to reprise her role as the perky law graduate for a second sequel to the hit 2001 comedy, which grossed $141 million at the global box office and became one of the most quotable comedies of the noughties.

The yet-to-be-signed deal with Hollywood studio MGM would reunite Witherspoon with original Legally Blonde writers Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, as well as the movie’s original producer Marc Platt.

Should all go to plan, Legally Blonde 3 will be produced in conjunction with Witherspoon’s own production company Hello Sunshine, which has helmed hits like 2014’s Gone Girl and HBO’s Emmy-winning drama series Big Little Lies.

Legally Blonde’s surprise success at the box office in the summer of 2001 lead to a sequelLegally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde, two years later – and while the reception to that particular film was, shall we say, more muted, Witherspoon has expressed interest in returning to the role of Elle Woods in recent years.

Appearing on The Late Late Show last year, the actress, 42, told host James Corden: “I think it would be kind of cool to see her 15 years later. Like, what’s she doing now? What do you think? I don’t know. But I need a good idea.”

She added: “[Elle] could be a Supreme Court Justice, or she could be a really great, powerful attorney … or she could be in prison!”

Consider us sold, Reese (as if there was ever any doubt).
