Nick Jonas: ‘Embracing my gay fans was a priority’
By Josh Haggis
Nick Jonas has played down claims that he is a new ‘gay icon’, but admitted courting gay fans has been a “priority” for him in the past year.
The singer/actor, who is gearing up to release his first UK solo single Jealous next month (February), has received a wealth of attention from gay fans since embracing a more adult image following the Jonas Brothers’ split in 2013.
The former Attitude cover star has also been praised for his role on DirecTV’s gritty drama Kingdom, where he plays a closeted gay boxer who is struggling to deal with the reality of keeping his sexuality a secret.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Jonas has played down the “gay icon” claims, insisting that his goal for last year was merely to “embrace” his gay fans in a way that the Jonas Brothers never did.
“I don’t know if I’d necessarily call myself a gay icon,” said the singer. “But my goal in the last year was to expand and grow as a person and an artist, and embracing my gay fans was a priority. Some of my gay friends have thanked me for that, and that’s a really good feeling.”
Meanwhile, Jonas recently revealed that he is “thrilled” to be playing a gay character – find out more here.
