Marvel fans call for Captain America to be given a boyfriend in next movie

By Samuel McManus

After pressure has been put on Disney to give Elsa a girlfriend in the upcoming sequel to Frozen, Marvel fans are now calling for Captain America to come out as bisexual.

The social media campaign comes after Idina Menzel showed support for the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend plea at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (May 22) night.

Marvel fan Jess Salerno spoke to Metro about started the Twitter hashtag, saying: “I feel like it sucks that people in the LGBT community don’t get the representation that they deserve and it would be so amazing for something like Captain America or Marvel to be able to portray that, and maybe just let people know that it’s okay to be who you are, you know?

“You don’t have to be scared, especially to be able to have children grow up in that way, I feel like it would do amazing things for the future.”

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have tweeted their support, hoping that Captain America will fall for his best friend Bucky Barnes or, more controversially, his rival Tony Stark.

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directing siblings behind Captain America: Civil War have previously hinted that an LGBT character being introduced to the Marvel Universe could be coming closer.

Joe Russo has recently said: “I think the chances are strong. I mean, it’s incumbent upon us as storytellers who are making mass-appeal movies to make mass-appeal movies, and to diversify as much as possible.”
