Mark Hamill on Luke Skywalker: “If you think Luke is gay, of course he is!”

By Fabio Crispim

Mark Hamill has stated that Star Wars character Luke Skywalker could be gay. This comes one week after JJ Abrams, The Force Awakens director, suggested that gay characters could be part of the Star Wars universe in upcoming films.

Abrams told press at the US-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards that “it seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in [the Star Wars] world.”

Talking to the Sun, Hamill says: “But now fans are writing and asking all these questions: ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me: ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

Hamill addressed a fan question involving Luke’s sexuality in a direct message on Twitter in January:

Hamill is set to reprise his role of Luke Skywalker in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII.
