Mariah Carey to guest star on musical drama ‘Empire’

By Will Stroude

Mariah Carey, who recently dropped a new teaser video for her new docu-series, Mariah’s World, is finally guest starring in musical soap opera Empire on their October 5 episode after much anticipation.

According to Fox the elusive chanteuse, who recently won the GLAAD Ally award, will take on the role of Kitty, a “mega-superstar” who will collaborate with character Jamal Lyons, played by Jussie Smollett, on an explosive new song.

Experiencing an obstacle during the duet, Kitty helps Jamal overcome personal struggles to reach a musical breakthrough.

The co-creator, executive producer and director of the series and also one of Mariah’s closest friends, Lee Daniels, has teamed up with Mariah in the past, starring in the 2013 historical drama The Butler and 2009’s emotional flick Precious.

The diva has previously talked about guest starring on the series, telling Watch What Happens Live’s Andy Cohen that: “They had this one idea and I was like, ‘Look if I’m not going to have an amazing character arc then why would we go on Empire to be basically a version of myself ?'”

She jokingly continued to say “So leave it to Lee and he’ll have me in a wig they took out of a garbage can and a mustache.”

Smollett, who came out publicly on Ellen in 2015, has said in the past that Mariah was his dream guest star.

“I keep saying, and I hope they can make this happen, because she’s one of Lee’s closest friends, I really want to see Mariah on the show,” he said.

Fans of Mariah will be definitely be getting a double-dose of their favourite, as her eight-part event docu-series Mariah’s World is set to debut on E! on 4 Dec.

Empire returns to US screens on Wednesday, 21 Sept at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
