Madonna has irked pop music fans with her reaction to Lil Nas’ X’s same-sex kiss on stage on the BET Awards last weekend.

Namely, the star shared a picture of her kissing Britney Spears at the 2003 VMAs along with the hashtag “#Diditfirst.”

At the awards ceremony in question, Madonna also kissed ‘Dirrty’ singer Christina Aguilera, sparking global headlines.

“Me and Madonna are friends”

Before we get into the fan backlash, it’s worth pointing out Lil Nas himself isn’t remotely bothered by Madonna’s remark.

The ‘Panini’ singer addressed the matter on Twitter yesterday, saying: “me and madonna are friends. it’s just a joke.”

In a second tweet, he added: “I thought we been knew y’all were friends.”

Pop culture commentators, however, were not as chilled about things.

Said one: “#diditfirst says fucking Madonna, lol. Yeah, she may have done it first BUT the huge difference is that their actually gay, people of color and the kiss was REAL!!!”

Said a second: “madonna reposting lil nas x’s performance and putting her performance where she kissed britney and christina next to it saying she “did it first” is so out of touch with reality and so ignorant its funny atp.”

A third added: “Oh Madonna. A kiss between two straight white women created for the male gaze is not the same. Lil Nas X is incredibly brave to do this knowing fine well the torrent of homophobia he’s gonna get directed at him afterwards.”

Adam Lambert, famously kissed a male bassist while performing ‘For Your Entertainment’ at the 2009 American Music Awards, causing international outrage from homophobes.

Attitude has approached a rep for Madonna for comment.
