Listen: Elaine Paige helps man propose to partner on Radio 2

By Will Stroude

West End icon Elaine Paige decided to play Cupid during her BBC Radio 2 show last weekend (July 26), after helping a man propose to his partner live on air.

In a moving segment of her Sunday afternoon show, the Cats star rang up long-time fan and listener Keith to personally read out a letter his partner Pieter had written for him.

Pieter wrote: “Being with Keith means that silence can be just as comfortable as a full-on debate about whether Imelda Staunton will win an Olivier Award for her performance in Gypsy, or how we’d write the sequel to Sex and the City 3 or the Devil Wears Prada.

“Happiness is seeing Keith giving me a wink across the room with his piercing blue eyes, or indeed belly laughs when we arrive at a theatere productions that’s been cancelled days ago. It’s coming home, discussing the day over a glass of champangne, watching Long Lost Family and not feeling embarrassed for crying.

“That’s love. And for me, love is life with Keith”.

There was a twist though, and after reading out the letter – which the usually unshakable Elaine admitted had “got her going”, – she put Pieter on the phone, who popped the question to the love of his life.

Keith promptly said yes, while Elaine promised to get her hat ready and save the date. *sniffs*
