Lil Nas X has hit back at critics after his new single ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ topped the charts in both the US and the UK.
The track, propelled by an epic video in which the openly gay star pole dances into hell and gives Satan a lap dance, has also reached the top spot in Ireland.
Lil Nas X previously scored the second-highest-selling single of 2019 with ‘Old Town Road’ featuring Billy Ray Cyrus.
“Could’ve gave up”
“Y’all told a 19 year old who had just escaped the lowest point of his life that he would never have a hit again,” the star said on Twitter.
“You told him to stop while he’s ahead. he could’ve gave up. but 4 multi platinum songs and 2 #1’s later, he’s still here. thank you to my team and my fans! ily. [Sic].”
He also said: “I hope my haters are sad. i hope they are crying. i want your tears to fill my grammy cup.”
The star’s other hit songs include ‘Holiday’ and ‘Panini’, the latter a top five single on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Despite attracting criticism from religious, anti-gay conservatives, the ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ video has a big fan in Miley Cyrus.
The ‘Midnight Sky’ singer showed her appreciation by recently writing on LNX’s Instagram that her favourite part of the clip was “when you’re in it/when the devil eats you a**”, along with a horned devil emoji.
