Jennifer Lopez is to star in and executive produce a new US TV drama called Shades of Blue.

US network NBC has ordered 13 episodes of the show, which it promises will be “a complex police series”.

Lopez will star as a character called Harlee McCord, who is described as “a single mother and detective recruited to work undercover for the FBI’s anti-corruption task force”.

From Paris With Lov  writer Adi Hasak will write and co-executive produce the series, while Lopez’s American Idol colleague will also serve as an executive producer. Shooting will start next year for a debut in the 2015-16 TV season.

NBC’s Jennifer Salke said in a statement: “Whether it’s producing, acting, singing or any of her other many entrepreneurial activities, Jennifer is an extraordinary talent and life force, and we’re delighted to be in business with her and Adi Hasak on this sophisticated show.

“We’re especially excited that Jennifer is returning to her acting roots from such great movies as Out of Sight and we know that she will create this complicated character in a vivid way that will breathe new life into the cop show genre.”

Lopez’s last regular TV acting role came some 20 years ago, in the short-lived 1994 TV series Hotel Malibu, which ran for just six episodes.
