Is an openly gay character about to join the ‘Star Wars’ cast?

By Samuel McManus

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ director J.J. Abrams has confirmed that openly gay characters are on their way to the movie franchise.

After casting the film series’ first black and female lead roles in John Boyega’s Finn and Daisy Ridley’s Rey respectively, Screen Crush reports that Abrams showed nothing but enthusiasm for introducing gay characters.

When asked by The Daily Beast whether we could expect homosexual characters in future ‘Star Wars’ movies, Abrams answered: “Of course! When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course.”

It is unknown when the first openly gay character will be cast, or whether an existing cast member will come out. Fans already believe that Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron and John Boyega’s Finn could be gay and, of course, they’ve already started to be ‘shipped’.
