HBO drops Ryan Murphy’s gay-themed drama series ‘Open’
By Josh Haggis
HBO has announced it won’t be moving forward with Ryan Murphy’s planned gay-themed drama series Open.
Open was described as “a multicharacter exploration of the complex, ever-evolving landscape of sexuality, monogamy and intimacy in relationships”, and would have been Murphy’s second gay-themed project for the network following the success of A Normal Heart earlier this year.
The series was set to star Fringe actress Anna Torv, Weeds star Jennifer Jason-Leigh and American Beauty actor Wes Bentley, and was being developed in collaboration with Dexter producer Lauren Gussis.
“After such a triumphant collaboration with The Normal Heart, everyone felt that Open was not the right next step for all involved. However, we fully expect to work together again in the near future, ” HBO told Entertainment Weekly in a statement.
Murphy’s adaptation of Ryan Murphy’s The Normal Heart was named Outstanding Television Movie at the Emmy Awards last month (August) – find out more here.
