Go behind the scenes of Years & Years’ pansexual orgy ‘Desire’ video

By Will Stroude

Years and Years got people’s attention earlier this month with the release of their camp, queer, and proudly sexual new video for hit single ‘Desire’, and now they’ve released a behind-the-scenes film, to show exactly what went down in that dark and dingy warehouse…

“As you can see, we’re just having a casual orgy” says lead singer and former Attitude cover star Olly Alexander. “[Actually], it’s more of a free, liberated, playful , sexual experience- and everyone’s invited.”

Olly – who just last week opened up about the homophobic abuse he’s been subjected to in public – issued a powerful statement on gay representation to coincide with the original video’s launch, opining the lack of actual ‘sexuality’ in many gay artists’ videos.

“I’ve been wanting to make a video with some of my queer family for a long time and ‘Desire’ felt like the right time to do it,” the 25-year-old said, adding: “I love pop (obviously) so, why is it that in 2016, a pop video featuring people expressing their sexuality who aren’t cis-gendered or heterosexual, feel at all unusual or progressive?”

He continued: “Most often I see the following kind of attitude – ‘we don’t mind if you’re gay, just don’t be too gay or that’s a bit much; a bit camp; a bit weird; don’t shove it in our faces etc.’

“Well, if ‘shoving it in your face’ essentially refers to the way that lots of straight pop stars get to assert their sexuality then I’ll be damned if I’m not gonna shove it in your face if I want to.”
