We’ve been treated to a first look at the cast of the upcoming gay rom-com, Fire Island, starring Bowen Yang, Joel Kim Booster, Matt Rogers, and Margaret Cho.

The film, which is slated to be released 3 June 2022 is set in the iconic gay mecca of the Fire Island Pines and is a modern-day take on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

An official synopsis reads: “The story centers around two best friends who set out to have a legendary week-long summer vacation with the help of cheap rosé and a cadre of eclectic friends.”

“We made something really, really special and unique and gay”

In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, Booster, who helped write and also stars in the film, says: “We made something really, really special and unique and gay.” Booster who plays Noah, this film’s Elizabeth Bennet, says the interpretation of Austen’s classic novel was obvious.

He says: “Jane Austen’s observations about the way people are awful to each other without being awful to each other—I was like, Oh, my God. This is shade. This is what gay men do all the time.”

Regarding people holding the film up as an important milestone in gay cinema, Booster tells Vanity Fair, “It makes me really nervous when people say [that]. Like, please don’t. I don’t need that. I feel like the stakes are really high for me.”

Co-writer and actor, Bowen Yang, known for his hilarious work on Saturday Night Live, says of the adaptation: “A Jane Austen narrative meeting an Asian American narrative meeting a queer narrative: Those three helices come together in a way that’s greater than the sum of their parts. And to say that something is greater than a Jane Austen narrative is insane—unhinged of me—to do. But I said it.”
