By Josh Haggis

Emma Stone has been cast as Billie Jean King in new film Battle of the Sexes.

The 26-year-old actress will play the legendary gay tennis star in the new project, which will tell the story of the famous 1976 ‘Battle of the Sexes’ grudge match between the groundbreaking female athlete and 1939 Mens Wimbledon champion, Bobby Riggs, who will be played by comedian Steve Carrell.

Emma Stone filming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in New York on 17 April.

According to Deadline, Little Miss Sunshine director Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are attached to the film, while The Fully Monty writer Simon Beaufoy is set to pen the script.

The Fox Searchlight film, which is set to start production later this year, will compete directly with an HBO-produced film about the same match starring Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks that was announced earlier this year.
