Dustin Lance Black tells Sam Smith to ‘stop texting’ his fiancé Tom Daley

Sam Smith might have walked away with an Oscar at last night’s Academy Awards in LA, but it seems the 23-year-old’s acceptance speech has sparked some unlikely beef with Hollywood screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. As he collected the Oscar for ‘Best Original Song’ for his James Bond theme ‘Writing’s on the Wall’ last night, Smith mistakenly claiming that he was the first openly gay man to receive an Academy Award – apparently getting in a muddle over comments Sir Ian McKellen recently made about an openly gay man never winning the ‘Best Actor’ award. “If this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world” Smith told the audience. “I stand here tonight as a proud gay man.” His comments have seemingly incurred the wrath of Dustin Lance Black, however, who won the Oscar for ‘Best Original Screenplay’ for Harvey Milk biopic Milk back in 2009. And he certainly didn’t hold back. “Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé”, the 41-year-old – who is engaged to British diving champion Tom Daley – wrote on Twitter this morning (Feb 29). Black then linked to his own Oscars acceptance speech from 2009, which he dedicated to LGBT youth.
