Cherry Valentine has died at the age of 28, her family has confirmed.

The drag queen, whose real name was George Ward, rose to fame on season two of RuPaul’sDrag Race UK in 2021.

The star passed away on Sunday 18 September, according to reports.

“It is with the most heart-wrenching and deepest sadness to inform you that our George – Cherry Valentine – has tragically passed away,” Ward’s family said in a statement, as shared by the BBC.

“This will come as a profound shock to most people and we understand there is no easy way for this to be announced.”

“As his family, we are still processing his death and our lives will never be the same,” they added.

“We understand how much he is loved and how many lives he has inspired and touched. All we ask is for your patience and your prayers in this time. We love you Georgie.”

Speaking to Attitude last year, the qualified mental health nurse said of working during the pandemic: “I’d be lying if I said it was fun. It was madness. Absolute madness. But I feel so privileged to be able to help, however which way I can.”

Cherry, who grew up in Darlington, County Durham, also fronted the BBC documentary Cherry Valentine: Gypsy Queen and Proud, in which she explored her roots as a queer member of the Roma Traveller community.
