Matt Smith has landed a major role in the upcoming Terminator reboot.

The 31-year-old actor, most famous for starring in Doctor Who from 2010-13, will play a character “with a strong connection to John Connor”, Paramount announced in a press release yesterday (May 2).

Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor is helming the reboot, which is titled Terminator: Genesis and is set for release in July 2015.

Smith joins Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and original Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film, which will be the fifth in the popular franchise.

The Terminator franchise began in 1984 with Schwarzenegger in the title role. The Austrian actor will return for the new movie after sitting out the last instalment, 2009’s Terminator: Salvation, as well as a short-lived US TV series called Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles that aired in 2007.

Matt Smith recently appeared in an acclaimed musical version of Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho, which ran at London’s Almeida Theatre from December to February.
