Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst has explained her bearded look, saying that the facial hair makes her feel “comfortable”.

On tonight’s episode of The Graham Norton Show, the Rise Like a Phoenix singer is asked whether her distinctive appearance confuses people.

“It’s my own truth,” she replies. “It makes me feel comfortable on stage. I love myself and the bearded lady is fun and expresses everything I feel.

“Being a teenager in a small Austrian village was not fabulous,” she adds. “I tried to fit in and changed myself to be part of the game. I now realise I can create the game.”

The 25-year-old also reveals that a bouquet of flowers from Elton John was waiting for her in her dressing room before the recording of Norton’s show.

“The card read, ‘We love you, Elton and David.'” she tells Norton.

Rise Like a Phoenix is headed for the top ten this weekend. The winning entry was at number nine in the midweek update released by the Official Chart Company on Wednesday (May 14).

You can see the full interview with the Austrian drag queen on tonight’s episode of The Graham Norton Show, which airs at 10.35pm on BBC1.
