‘Charmed’ reboot will include a gay character

The hit supernatural series is going gay this time around.

The upcoming Charmed reboot will feature a gay character, producers have revealed.

It was announced last month that a remake of the hit supernatural series was being written by Jane The Virgin writers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin. According to reports, the remake will be set in the present day and centred on “three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches.” 

Entertainment website TVLine obtained the casting breakdowns for the show and revealed that the sister’s new names are Macy, Mel and Madison. In addition, the show’s producers are casting for the trio’s Whitelighter, now named Harry, as well as Macy’s filmmaker-boyfriend Galvin and Madison’s ex-lover, Brian.

To top that off, however, producers are also searching for an actress to play Mel’s girlfriend, confirming that one of the three sisters is lesbian. 

 

The character descriptions also hint that Macy may have been adopted, or seperated from her sisters.

Macy is described as a “witty, intense science nerd” with a Ph.D. in quantom physiscs who is “moving with her boyfriend Galvin to Hilltowne, Michigan”. The description reads: “Macy has reason to believe that she is the sister of Mel and Madison.” Her power is telekinesis. 

Meanwhile, Mel Pruitt is a “strong-willed feminist” who “feels deeply and is a bit controlling.” Mel is confirmed to be a lesbian and will become angry and “defiantly unkempt” in the wake of a tragic accident, pushing away those closest to her including girlfriend Detective Soo Jin. Her power is “time-freezing.” 

The youngest sister, Madison Pruitt, is an “athletic college student” and the “opposite of her feminist sister with a desire to fit in.” The description explains Madison is “horrified to learn she is a witch” and describes her power as “hearing people’s thoughts.” 

News that Charmed is be remade hasn’t gone down well with original star Holly Marie Combs, who previously slammed the remake on Twitter for describing the show as a “feminist reboot”.

Combs continued her social media rampage after the casting descriptions were released on Wednesday (February 7).

She wrote on Twitter: “I have no words… I mean I have a lot of words but at this juncture… sure… year… We wish them well…” 

In another tweet she added: “It’s official. They really have never watched it.” 

But Marie-Combs didn’t stop there as she then took aim at US Weekly, People and Perez Hilton for implying she wasn’t happy with the “LGBT twist” in their reports of the news. 

She tweeted: “I think I made it abundantly clear that I have few issues with the reboot. The CW including a lesbian character isn’t one of them. But now that we’re on the subject. Calling it a ‘twist’ in a marketing release is a mistake and part of a bigger problem than too many reboots.” 

“But y’know the 1st press release gave the reboot a feminist ‘twist’. So. Yeah. Let’s just all hope the actual script is filled with characters that are regarded and trearted as equals in their effort to inspire a new generation.”

Marie-Combs added: “And that The CW fires their marketing dept soon.” 

She ended the rant with: “In closing… We wish them well. Again.”
