Charli XCX: ‘I’d reverse anti-gay laws around the world’

By Sam Rigby

Charli XCX has said she would reverse all of the world’s anti-gay laws if she could.

The Boom Clap singer said that she has a particular interest in the political situation in Uganda, because her mother was born and raised in the country.

In February, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed an anti-gay bill into law – which means that those who commit acts of so-called “aggravated homosexuality” could face life imprisonment. Those who reach out to the gay community could also face prison sentences for the “promotion of sexuality”.

Speaking to Stylist magazine about what she would do if she were ‘Queen of Everything’, the singer – real name Charlotte Aitchison – said: “My mother was born and raised in Uganda so I have a connection there. If I was queen of the world, I’d reverse all the anti-gay laws there, and everywhere.

“I’d also like to see more female politicians and make sure young people were more interested in voting.”

The 21-year-old also said that she would like to ban the term ‘guilty pleasures’.

“They’re all actually my real pleasures,” she explained. “I think the Spice Girls are the best thing ever, and I also love t.A.T.u and Paris Hilton. I would have loved to job swap with her during her The Simple Life era.”

The singer achieved her highest charting single to date in the UK on Sunday (July 28), when Boom Clap entered the UK’s Official Singles Chart at number six – find out more here. Earlier this month she served as a special guest DJ at the Attitude HOT 100 party.
