‘Beauty and the Beast’ remake: First look at Emma Watson’s Belle

By Will Stroude

With just a few months until the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast hits British cinemas, Entertainment Weekly have shared some exclusive snaps from the upcoming film, showing Belle and Beast in all their real-life glory.

The costumes for Belle, played by Emma Watson, have been praised for a more modern reimagining after it was revealed that Watson wouldn’t be corseted.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, costume designer Jaqueline Durran said: “In Emma’s reinterpretation, Belle is an active princess. She did not want a dress that was corseted or that would impede her in any way.”

The film, which comes out in March next year, has even updated Belle’s backstory. Like her father Maurice, she will also be an inventor.

Describing Belle’s live-action incarnation, Watson explained: “we created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead. So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor.”

“In the animated movie, it’s her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle,” she added.
