BBC drama What It Feels Like for a Girl has gone international, released in the US on Prime Video to coincide with Pride Month.
The five-time BAFTA TV award-nominated series aired on BBC Three in June 2025 and has gone on to become a global success, earning several recognitions abroad.
Adapted from Paris Lees’s memoir, the coming-of-age drama follows 15-year-old Byron (Ellis Howard) navigating gender identity and sexuality in 2000s Nottingham.

The show features a large LGBTQ+ ensemble cast led by Howard, alongside Hannah Jones, Laquarn Lewis, Alex Thomas-Smith, Adam Ali and more.
Writer Lees and leading actor Howard took home the prestigious Television Award at the Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards 2025, presented by Boots star Max Parker.

Speaking at the Attitude Awards last year, Lees said: “Everyone who worked on this project really cared about it and brought so much energy.”
“Thank you to all the people who sent me kind messages, to all the young people who are afraid to go to school tomorrow, to live in their father’s house, to read all the hate that’s said about them – nobody gets to decide who they are. You decide who you are. And we’re not going to let the bastards win.”
Pointing to their castmates, Howard honoured the moment by reflecting on the friendships he made with his fellow actors. “We made this show for the community, and so to be here and given this is such an honour.”

What It Feels Like for a Girl premiered in the US on Prime Video yesterday (1 June), through a deal with ITV Studios.
